Quincy Jones’ Petition to Obama

Before, and after the inauguration, and surrounding the festivities were all these emails I received to “Sign the Petition for the Secretary of Arts” for the United States. And I’ve been wondering what this was all about. Since Quincy Jones has been cited as the source for all of this, I wondered just exactly his motivations for such a positions would be, and this is a video of him speaking about what he thinks such a position would do for our nation.

I don’t know if I can agree with his views, but I do agree that I think we need one. Artists are constantly pushed to change with the times. Maybe, for once, we can change the times to help us for once. Now, realistically, with the economy the way it is, and Obama’s one-thing-at-a-time way of approaching things, we may not get this position right away, and, frankly, we may never get it. However, by signing this petition, someone up on capitol hill knows that there are a fair amount of Americans who desire such an office in the Cabinet.

Here’s the website to sign the petition (electronically). You can also set it to private, so that no one knows you signed it, if you so wish.

This article talks about the petition, and how it was started (it wasn’t started by Quincy Jones, but in honor of him). Think about it wisely, and follow your heart. I encourage people to sign it, but understand if they don’t.

Peabody in Washington: Inauguration Edition

Peabody students and faculty have always had a close connection with Washington D.C. — here are some of the Peabody related events surrounding the upcoming Inauguration.

Peabody Faculty member Anthony McGill, clarinet will be performing at the Inauguration alongside cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinst Itzhak Perlman and pianist Gabriela Montero, premiering a piece written for the inaugural ceremonies by composer John Williams.
